Designing for expanded gamut printing – what are the benefits?
Designers often ask us about the benefits of a printer having an expanded gamut option.
Expanded gamut means that a printer can use additional colors in the printing process to create a richer and more eye popping printed piece.
For example, when your printer builds color from the conventional CMYK inks, there is, mathematically, a limited color gamut. That can make some colors hard to reproduce.
However, with extended gamut or expanded gamut, printers use their own presses and the inks of their choice to achieve even more color options.
What do more color options mean?
Well, if you compare printed samples side by side, you’ll see how an expanded gamut can add unusual effects or more photo realistic color to the printed piece.
At Wallace Carlson, we’ve taken extended gamut to the next level.
We’re using Toyo Kaleido Plus 2.0 inks to achieve our “super-expanded gamut” hexachrome printing process.
“This is like hexachrome on steroids!” says Charlie Cox, COO/Partner at Wallace Carlson Printing, based in greater Minneapolis, Minnesota.
For designers, this means we can make color pop. We can add richness to photos. We can add eye-catching depth and dimension.
This is something that really has to be seen to be believed.
We’d love to show you side by side print samples using our super-expanded gamut hexachrome process.
