When print buyers and graphic designers hear that Wallace Carlson Printing is a G7 Master Qualified Printer, they think we have something magical that allows us to achieve consistent color across the spectrum of inks, substrates and processes.
It may seem like magic, but actually it’s more like math.
The “G” in the name G7 stands for “gray,” which is essential to our calibration process. The other colors involved in G7 are seven primary and secondary solid ink values which are cyan, magenta, yellow, black, red, green, and blue. Cyan-magenta-yellow-black consist of the CMYK components, and red-green-blue are the RGB components.
By controlling these elements, printers like Wallace Carlson Printing can more precisely control the production of color.
The key to controlling color, interestingly enough, is actually in the grayscale. This seems counterintuitive because gray is seemingly devoid of color. However, we gain crucial information through the grayscale that informs the way we handle all the other colors.
Historically, printers did not control the grayscale element of printing, and it showed. But over the years, scientists and color experts in the field of printing started to notice how the photography field used gray scales to balance color and control results.
Soon an international consortium was formed to analyze how color is perceived and portrayed, and these experts began working on bringing the grayscale concept to the commercial printing industry.
Today, G7 has been adopted and used by printing companies around the world to print more repeatable, predictable and pleasing color.
Our G7 Master Qualification gives print buyers and brand managers the confidence that we can successfully produce your brand color even if there are a variety of inks (such as our H-UV and expanded gamut inks), substrates, devices, and processes that are required for your project.
